Bangkok Local Tips 2026

No paid placements. No tourism board. What locals and long-term expats actually do — and what they skip.

🚇 Getting Around

BTS Skytrain beats taxis during rush hour

7–9am and 5–8pm: BTS is faster and ฿15–฿50. Taxi meter easily 3–5× longer.

Airport rail link beats Grab to the airport

฿45 flat vs ฿400–฿600 by car. 30 min from Phaya Thai to Suvarnabhumi. No traffic.

Khlong boats are the hidden fast lane

Saen Saep canal express boats: ฿9–฿19, skips all road traffic in central Bangkok.

Grab beats taxis at night for pricing

Taxis at night often refuse meter or quote fixed prices. Grab shows price upfront, no negotiation.

🍜 Food

Eat where lines form before 11am or after 1pm

Best local lunch spots sell out by 12:30. Locals queue from 10:45. Arrive early or eat late.

Skip tourist-area massage — walk one block back

Main street spa: ฿500/hr. Same quality 50m off the tourist strip: ฿200–฿300.

Or Tor Kor Market > floating markets for food

Or Tor Kor (near Chatuchak) has the best fresh produce and prepared food. No tourist mark-up, no show.

Avoid restaurants with English menus only

Thai-language menu beside English = locals eating here. English-only = tourist trap. Same rule applies to massage menus.

💸 Money

ATMs: Kasikorn and Bangkok Bank charge ฿220 fee

All local ATMs now charge ฿180–฿220 per withdrawal. Withdraw more, fewer times. Some foreign banks reimburse.

PromptPay QR codes everywhere — ask if they take it

Scan QR and pay in Thai Baht at thousands of vendors. Your bank's app may support international transfer.

Negotiate tuk-tuks and boats — always

Tuk-tuks and river charter boats have no meter. Name a price before boarding. First quote is rarely final.

🎯 Activities

Book Muay Thai training early — gyms fill by 9am

Good gyms accept walk-ins but morning sessions fill fast. WhatsApp the night before to reserve.

Cooking classes: choose one near a wet market

The best cooking classes include a market visit first. Adds 1 hour but teaches ingredient selection.

Yoga: many studios offer ฿100–฿200 first-class deals

Nearly every yoga studio has a first-time visitor deal. Check the studio Instagram or just ask at the desk.

Grand Palace: go before 9am to avoid crowds

Dress code strictly enforced. Open 8am. By 10am it's packed with tour groups. Morning light is better anyway.

🛺 Tuk-tuks, boats & local transport — real prices
🛺
Tuk-tuk
Khao San Road → Grand Palace
฿60–฿100
🕐 5–10 min
💡 Agree price BEFORE getting in. Driver asks ฿200–฿300 initially. ฿80 is fair. Never let them take you to a 'temple that's closed today' — it's a scam.
Khlong express boat
Tha Chang → Saphan Taksin (full run)
฿10–฿50 (by zone)
🕐 20–35 min
💡 Orange flag = express (faster, more stops). Yellow/green flag = local, more stops. Boat leaves when full — squeeze in. Best used 7–9am to skip road traffic.
🚢
Chao Phraya Tourist Boat
Sathorn Pier ↔ Phra Arthit Pier
฿60 (unlimited day pass ฿200)
🕐 60–90 min full route
💡 Blue flag tourist boat. Slower, air-conditioned, stops at all major sites. Day pass best value if visiting multiple riverside temples.
🚌
Songthaew (red truck taxi)
Silom / BTS stops → local destinations
฿10–฿20/person
🕐 Depends on traffic
💡 Shared minibus. Flag one down and tell the driver where you're going. Pay when you get off. Rare in tourist areas but common in local neighbourhoods.

Pro tips:
  • Set pickup to a landmark, not a side soi — drivers find large gates/7-Eleven easier

  • GrabCar > GrabTaxi for cleaner AC + no meter disputes
  • Surge pricing disappears if you walk 1 block from BTS exit

🇹🇭 Bangkok Etiquette
🙏
Wai greeting
Press palms together & bow slightly to show respect. Thais appreciate when visitors try it.
👟
Remove shoes
Always remove shoes before entering temples, many restaurants, and traditional homes. Look for the shoe pile at the door.
👗
Temple dress code
Cover shoulders and knees at temples. Carry a light scarf — it doubles as a cover-up and sun protection.
🤐
Respect the monarchy
Never criticize the Thai royal family. It's deeply offensive and illegal under lèse-majesté law.
💰
Tipping culture
Not mandatory but appreciated: ฿20–50 for massage, 10% for restaurants, ฿20 for taxi. Already included in some hotels.
🚿
Street food hygiene
Busiest stalls = freshest food. Look for stalls where locals eat. Avoid pre-cut fruit sitting in heat.
🛡️ Stay safe in Bangkok
🚖
Use Grab, not tuk-tuks for long trips
Tuk-tuks are tourist traps for long distances. Grab is fixed-price, air-conditioned, and insured.
💊
Check tap water
Don't drink tap water. Bottle water at 7-Eleven is ฿8. Most hotels provide bottles.
🌞
Sunscreen and hydration
Bangkok heat + humidity = dangerous dehydration. Drink 2L+/day. Convenience stores are everywhere.
📱
Keep copies of documents
Take photos of passport, hotel booking, insurance. Keep them in Google Photos or email drafts.
💰
Don't flash cash
Use an ATM inside a bank or mall. AEON ATMs charge lower fees. Carry small bills in a separate pocket.
🍢
Street food hygiene check
High turnover = fresh food. Avoid stalls with pre-cut meat sitting in heat. Busy at lunchtime = safe.

FAQ — Bangkok Travel Tips

When should I avoid Bangkok?

April (Songkran / Thai New Year) is extremely busy but fun if you're prepared to get soaked. Avoid arriving first week of April for pure relaxation. Peak tourist season is Nov–Feb (cool, dry). May–Oct is hot/rainy but cheaper.

What tourist traps should I avoid in Bangkok?

Common ones: (1) Tuk-tuk tours to 'special deals' at jewelry stores — it's a scam. (2) Pad Thai on Khao San Road — overpriced and inauthentic. (3) Long-tail boats at Tha Chang pier — high pressure, inflated prices. (4) Suit tailors near tourist streets — 48-hour suits are low quality.

Is Bangkok safe for solo travelers?

Yes. Bangkok is generally very safe for solo travelers including solo women. Main cautions: watch drinks at nightlife venues, don't accept free tours from strangers (jewelry scam), use Grab not unlicensed taxis at night.

How much money do I need per day in Bangkok?

Budget: ฿1,500–฿2,500/day (hostel + street food + BTS). Mid-range: ฿3,000–฿6,000/day (hotel + restaurants + one activity). Comfortable: ฿8,000–฿15,000/day (nice hotel + spa + dining + taxis). Luxury: unlimited.
